ABOUT DARE TO BE SQUARE - WEST!
------------------------------------------------
A weekend of square dance & music workshops, dancing, jamming, and tons of fun!
Our mission is to promote and preserve traditional square dancing.

"Dare to be Square" was founded in 2003 by Phil Jamison & Nancy Mamlin at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. Phil & Nancy continued to organize the event annually through 2006.

In 2007, a West-coast version of the event was hosted by the Portland Old Time Community (AKA Bubbaville). The effort was headed by Maggie Brunjes and Caroline Oakley, who were inspired after attending "Dare to Be Square" in North Carolina. The Bubbaville Community's hard work resulted in a very successful 2007 & subsequent 2008 event!

This year, 2009, the event is traveling north to Seattle, where Charmaine Slaven & Tony Mates, along with the Seattle Subversive Square Dance Society, will present the event.

This year, we will be featuring nationally acclaimed caller, Bob Dalsemer, along with our local favorites. Seattle bands The Tallboys & the Small Wonder Stringband will supply the dance tunes.

See 2009 Event Details Page for all the info!!

Who should come? This event is for everyone. Callers, old-time musicians,
dancers, and listeners alike should come out for this fantastic & fun event.
