KING'S AND QUEEN'S HIGHWAY - PROMENADE
- Promenade ccw. Lead lady casts off (turns right) and dances cw
while partner continues
ccw. Each lady in turn casts off as the last lady in line
passes by. When partner's
meet they resume the promenade. [Queen's Highway;
Bannerman]
- Queen's Highway.
- Same as 1 above except all the ladies cast off
together. [Backtrack 1; Bonner]
- Promenade around that ring
Promenade your pretty little thing Ladies roll go the other way back Gents you walk the same old track. Meet your partner with your right hand Grand chain all around the land.
- Same as 1 above except ladies pass partners the
first time they meet. At the second
meeting partners swing once around and promenade. [Ladies Turn
Back - Queen's
Highway; Hipps]
- Couples promenade
Ladies walk that Queen's Highway. Meet on the road and pass her by. Swing her the next time and promenade on.
The same, but ladies swing partner upon first meeting. [Ladies Turn Back; Hendrix]
- Promenade ccw. Ladies continue ccw; lead gent
steps behind partner to outside the circle
and dances cw. Each gent in turn steps out as the end of the
gents' line passes by. When
partners meet the gents step back in to place, passing behind
their partners to resume
promenade. [King's Highway; Bannerman]
- King's Highway.
- Same as 4 above except gents pass partners the
first time they meet. At the second
meeting partners swing once around and promenade. [Gents Turn
Back - King's Highway; Hipps]
- Couples promenade.
Men walk the King's Highway Meet on the road and pass her by. Swing her the next time and promenade on.
- Circle left, circle right, then drop hands and continue ccw single file, lady in front of partner. Then all the ladies at once step out to the right and travel single file cw in their own circle. The concentric single file circles keep moving until partners can meet, swing and promenade. [Single File; Bonner]
- All join hands and make a big ring
Circle to the left. Now back to the right in a single line Ladies in the lead, gents behind. Meet your honey with a great big smile And when you get home just swing her awhile.
KING'S AND QUEEN'S HIGHWAY - GENTS GO LEFT LADIES GO RIGHT
- Promenade. Either start in a line of couples facing up the hall
or: When lead couple
reaches 6 o'clock (the point farthest away from the band) they
turn and promenade
straight up the center of circle followed by the other couples.
At the top gent goes left and
lady goes right. Each couple in turn splits up at the top and
follows the leads, curving across the
top of the hall and straight down the sides. At the bottom the
leads curve in and dance toward
each other. They rejoin and promenade again, either ccw around the
hall or straight up the
hall, followed by the rest of the couples. (In that case, at the
top of the hall the original
ccw promenade is resumed by all couples.) [King's Highway;
Bonner]
- King's Highway
Split that ring like a great big saw Ladies go gee, gents go haw. When lead couple reaches the bottom of the hall... Meet your honey and promenade If she don't like cornbread give her lemonade.
- Similar to 1 above except when couples separate at the
top of the hall the first time, the gent goes
right and the lady goes left. This is accomplished by twirling the
lady under joined left
hands. She rotates cw as she crosses in front of the gent and they separate from each other. Each
couple in turn does the
same. When partners meet at the bottom they join right hands and
the lady twirls ccw
over to the gent's right side to resume promenade. [Queen's
Highway; Bonner]
- Queen's Highway everybody
Gents go right, ladies go left When lead couple reaches the bottom of the hall... Meet your partner, give her a whirl Then promenade that pretty little girl.
- Start is similar to 1 above except lead couple
cuts through center starting at the top,
nearest the band and caller. They lead the other couples down the
center in a column. As
the lead couple reaches the bottom, they turn left and circle ccw
back to the top. The
couple just behind them turns right and goes cw, each couple in
turn alternating left or
right. When couples meet at the top they pivot (the person
nearsest the center is the
anchor) to face down, join hands in lines of four and promenade
down the center.
At the
bottom the lead line goes left, the following line goes right,
etc., circling back to the top.
When they meet at the top, lines of four pivot (person on the end
nearest center being the
anchor) and form lines of eight. These lines go down the center
to finish, or, if the hall is
big enough, to continue forming larger lines. Dance can end here or other figures may follow.[Grand March;
Bonner] [Morgantown Special Ending for Fig. 7 (Grand March);
Dalsemer]
- Promenade down the center of the ring
Grand March all and hear me sing. Odds go left, evens go right Dance all around with all your might. When you meet you promenade four Dance on down the center of the floor. First line left, second line right Come back around and hold on tight. When you meet you pick up eight Now move on down and don't be late. ~ Bonner
- As in 1 above, couples promenade up the center
and separate at the top. Gents go left to
form a ccw single file circle and ladies go right to form a cw
circle. When partners meet
near the bottom they promenade together a few steps up through the
center. Then the lady
crosses in front of the gent to join the ccw circle and her
partner crosses to his right into
the ladies' circle. When partners meet near the bottom again they
trade sides and
promenade up the center. At the top the original ccw promenade is
resumed.
[King's/Queen's Highway; Matthews]
- Starts the same as 1. Couples split up into two
single file circles. When the last couple
separates, the gents join hands in a circle and continue ccw while
the ladies join hands
and circle cw. Continues with King's and Queen's Highway Subset
1 below. [Gents Go
Left Ladies Go Right; Gilpin]
- Gents go left and ladies right.
KING'S & QUEEN'S HIGHWAY SUBSET
- After splitting up and gents are in one circle, ladies in another. Each
circle form its own right hand star. Followed
by Ladies Hold Hands High below. [Venus and Mars;
Bonner]
- Now join your hands and make two stars
One like venus and one like mars.
- After splitting up and gents are in one circle, ladies in another. When lead partners are
the maximum distance from
each other, on opposite sides of their respective circles, the
circles stop. Holding hands
throughout, the lead gent crosses his circle, pulling the rest
with him. He goes under an
arch formed by any two gents on the opposite side. Pulling all the
gents with him, the lead
gent then goes under a ladies' arch and into the center of the
ladies' circle. The gents'
circle is now turned inside-out and is in the center of the
ladies' circle. Gents are facing
the ladies and are near their partners. The gents circle left all
the way around. When they
meet partners, swing and resume promenade. [Ladies Hold Hands
High; Bonner]
[Ladies Hold Hands High; Gilpin]
- Ladies hold hands high and mark the time
Half way around and the other way back Dance on around that railroad track. Swing your partner 'round and 'round And make a big ring when she comes down. ~ Bonner
