LADIES IN THE CENTER BACK TO BACK
  1. This is a mixer finish. Ladies step into center and stand back to back facing out. Gents walk single file ccw until instructed to take a new partner and promenade. During promenade and without dropping hands, ladies swing over to gent's left side. Promenade continues and then ladies swing over to gent's right side. Promenade off floor but keep this partner for the next dance. [Break and Swing the New Girl; Smith]

Ladies to the center and then face out
    Gents outside and circle right

Keep this girl for the next dance
    Promenade her off the floor

  2. Similar to 1 above. Ladies step into center and stand back to back facing out. Gents walk single file ccw until instructed to take a new partner and swing. Lady steps back into center facing out. Gent continues single file promenade around ccw to swing original partrner and promenade. [Ladies Back to Back; Hipps]

Ladies to the center, stand back to back.
    Gents promenade the outside track,
Now take a girl and swing awhile,
Put her back and watch her smile.
    Ladies stand back to back.
    Gents promenade the outside track,
Now find your own and swing awhile,
Promenade around with a great big smile.

  3. Ladies step into center and stand back to back facing out. Gents walk single file ccw all the way around the ladies and stop in front of lady who is just before partner. Gent and that lady step forward and back (balance) and then swing. Lady steps back into center facing out. Gents continue ccw all the way around the ladies, stop and dance as above with the lady just before the one he previously danced with. This is repeated until partners are back together. [Ladies in the Center Gents Promenade; Gilpin] [Ladies in the Center Gents Promenade, N.C. version; Bonner]

Ladies in the center. Gents promenade.
    Drop back one.
    Forward and back.
Forward and swing. Put her back and on you go.
    ~ Gilpin

  4. Ladies step into center and stand back to back facing out. Gents walk single file ccw all the way around the ladies, pass partner and stop in front of the next lady and swing with her. Lady steps back into center facing out. Gents continue ccw all the way around the ladies. He passes the one he just swung, stops in front of the next lady and swings with her.
Now, at the finish of this swing the ladies put the gents in the center back to back. Ladies now promenade single file ccw all the way around, pass ORIGINAL partner and next gent, stop before the third gent and swing with him. Gent puts the lady in the center back to back and continues ccw all the way around the ladies, passes the last one he swung and stops in front of the next lady to swing with her. Repeat, alternating between gents and ladies until back with partners. [Railroad Track, West VA version; Bonner]

Ladies in the lead, gents in back.

Get your partner when you come around.
         Swing her out and promenade.
    Promenade around that ring
         Promenade your pretty litle thing.

  5. Same as 3 above except gents promenade cw, pass partner and swing the next lady. [Ladies in Center Back to Back; Levin]

Ladies in center, back to back.
    Gents shuffle to left.
Pass your partner one, swing, place her back.
    Go on around.
Pass your partner two, swing, place her back.
    Go on around.
    Swing home, corners too.
RAISE THE WINDOW - Strive to maintain a circular path. As "locks" form, move toward the center to reduce strain.
  1. All hands joined in a large circle. Designated lead gent releases corner's hand. His corner and her partner raise joined hands in an arch. Lead gent pulls everyone through the arch, continuing cw around the outside and back to place. The corner gent turns 3/4 under his own arch, lowering his right arm onto his left shoulder to "lock" into position. The locked gent and his corner lady then raise the next arch and lead gent drags everyone through the same. All continue cw, the corner lady turning 3/4 under her own arch. She lowers her right arm onto her left shoulder to lock in place. Lead gent continues to pull the line through every arch (locking the person on the left side of each arch.) The last lady (lead gent's corner) puts her free right hand on her shoulder and lead gent takes it with his free left hand to finish. Now all move cw.

UNLOCK. To release the lock: (a) Raise right arms and rotate cw to reform the original circle. (Or, in 4, raise left arms and rotate ccw.) (b) Reverse the procedure. The lead gent, or the last gent (lead gent's corner's partner,) releases corner, raises right arm and turns cw to unlock. He then passes under the arch formed by his partner and her corner, continuing cw and unlocking her. Continue unlocking until the original circle is reformed. Circle left
Raise the Window, raise it high
Your own true love is passing by
    Hurry, hurry, hurry
Shut that window, shut it tight
We won't be home till way in the night
    Circle left
Break the lock, and bust the pane
    Open the window again
    Hurry, hurry, hurry
    Swing your partner
    ~ Smith

  2. Similar to 1 above. Lead gent releases corner, then rotates cw, bringing right arm to rest on his left shoulder. Lead gent then goes cw under arch formed by his partner and her corner, locking her right arm on her left shoulder. Lead gent continues cw through all the arches in succession to lock everyone as in 1 above. Circle cw. See UNLOCK above. [Grape Vine Twist; Gilpin]

Grape vine twist! ~ Bascom Lunsford, as well as Ida Levin, no doubt called in an older style that used few words and could be belted out by a dancer/caller without aid of a microphone.

  3. Same as 2 above except for lead gent's initial move. Lead gent passes in front of partner, rotates cw as he backs under the arch formed by his partner and her corner. He continues rotating cw, placing his right arm on his left shoulder until he is through the arch and facing cw around the circle. Continue as in 2 above. See UNLOCK above. [Grapevine Twist; Bonner]

  4. Similar to 3 above. Lead lady release corner, rotating ccw as she backs under arch formed by her partner and his corner. Continue until all dancers have left arms resting on right shoulders. See UNLOCK above. [Grapvine Twist - Buck and Wing Variation; Bonner]

  5. All hands joined in a large circle. Designated lead gent releases corner's hand. His own partner and her corner (gent 2) raise joined hands in an arch. Lead gent pulls everyone through the arch, continuing cw around to the inside of the circle. Lead gent then pulls all through the next arch made by couple 2, continuing cw around to the center of the ring. Next with gent 2 and his corner, then couple 3, until all possible arches have been passed through and the original circle is reformed. [Georgia Rang Tang p. 31; Rohrbough] [Georgia Rang Tang; Smith] [Georgia Rang Tang; Hipps]

    Circle left
Halfway back with a Georgia Rang Tang
Make your feet go whickety whack
    Hurry, hurry, hurry
    ~ Smith

  6. In a circle, lead gent releases corner. Gent leads into the center and through an arch formed by the third couple down. He passes ccw around the outside of the circle, ducking through another arch of his choice and back to the center. Lead gent continues weaving in and out of the circle, ducking through arches of his choice until the end of the line is reached. He then turns cw and leads all into a circle left. [Thread the Needle; Bonner]

All join hands make a big ring
Circle to the left and hear me sing.
Back to the right, but not too far
Now thread the needle from where you are.
